Ground Zero Grand Prix 2013 (Toronto division)
-
It’s no surprise that King of the Dot’s hometown has the strongest bracket in the Ground Zero tournament. Toronto has been a breeding ground for some of the league’s top talent, and the upcoming Grand Prix should feature some of the best early-round competition in the entire tourney. Not only have a few of the following MC’s battled on the main channel, but one has battled in New York’s Ultimate Rap League, while another has a battle with over 500,000 YouTube views. Making it out of this division will be a tough task for even the front-runners.

Luciano Crakk vs Kinaze
Luciano Crakk is part of a growing group of gun-bar battlers in KOTD. (The early years were heavy on comedic content from the likes of Kid Twist, HFK and Jack Shitt.) Crakk also has the distinction of (likely) being the first Canadian battler to appear on URL, where he’s battled twice, the most notable match-up being against JC. Going into the Grand Prix, Crakk is an early favourite to win the Toronto division. In his most recent battle against Seattle’s Sun Tzu, Crakk scored a debatable victory, though he did execute a rare clean performance: -

Kinaze
Hailing from Mississauga, Kinaze is a throwback to Grind Time-era battlers who mixed crowd-pleasing comedy and tough gun bars. Over the past two years, he’s appeared in five Ground Zero battles, all of which are severely underexposed. Kinaze is also capable of writing complex rhymes and performing intricate flows without sacrificing quality. Against Teddy KGB, he proved why he’s one of the most versatile battlers in Ground Zero: -

Step Easy vs Chris Tipsy
Pop quiz: What has Step Easy accomplished that Bender, Arcane, Thesaurus and Loe Pesci have yet to do in a single KOTD battle? Answer: Get over 500,000 YouTube views. Sure, the reason Step Easy has one massively popular battle has little to do with him: he battled Anygma, the founder of Filipino battle league FlipTop, which posts better YouTube traffic than any other league. Still, Step Easy’s performance against Anygma was arguably his best to date, one that showcases his style of comedic wordplay: -

Chris Tipsy
Chris Tipsy has been around since KOTD videos were shot with low-def cameras in small venues. Back then, Tipsy couldn’t amass a favourable record against the likes of Miracle, Skelly and Scott Free, but in recent months, he’s found more success as a mainstay on the Ground Zero circuit. (Also, he somehow managed to resurrect his career after losing a “Career Match,” which was supposed to oust him from the league.) In this battle against Bulle, Tipsy coasts to victory on the basis of his superior flow: -

Yung Casper vs Notez
In a short time, Yung Casper has become a veteran on both KOTD’s main channel and Ground Zero. Given the level of competition he’s faced — against the likes of 100 Bulletz, Lexx Luthor, Luciano Crakk and Prince Ali — Casper is on the short-list of favourites in the Toronto bracket. Casper always brings an intense, aggressive performance, like in this debatable loss to Tycoon Tax: -

Notez
There’s no sense beating around the bush: Notez is a character. His age is listed in KOTD videos as “unlimited.” His wheezy voice and unplaceable accent are his alone. And he has an uncanny ability of showing up in random battlers’ corners, like when he went apeshit next to Pesci and Bender during Osa’s performance against Sonny Bamboo. Here is Notez in his most recent Ground Zero battle, a 3-2 victory against the Bronx’s S. Gram: -

KP vs Postal
There’s a shocking number of battlers named KP. The KP competing in the Ground Zero tourney is decidedly not the KP who battled Nuborn on URL. The KP competing in the Ground Zero tourney is certainly not the KP who battled outdoors at “the River Landing.” The KP competing in the Ground Zero tourney also goes by Kid Platinum, which makes this whole situation very confusing. Here he is in a recent victory: -

Postal
Over the years, Postal has amassed an undefeated record, though mostly against low-tier competition. Time and again, he’s been a reliable and prepared battler, which has given him the edge against unpolished up-and-comers. Here’s a good example: -

Teddy KGB vs. eMCeeBill
Teddy KGB is a bald, Jewish battler in his late-20s, which automatically makes him unlike any other rapper in the scene. He’s also a pretty smart guy, given his first round against Kinaze, which was constructed of science bars. He’s lost some close battles, but here’s a decisive victory in Teddy KGB’s favour: -

eMCee Bill
Like a couple other battlers in the Toronto bracket, eMCee Bill competed in last year’s main channel Grand Prix, but didn’t get far. And like his buddy poRICH, he appears to enjoy drinking before, during and after his battles. As far as performance goes, eMCee Bill typically relies on using his brand of potty humour to win over the crowd. Bonus fact: he really likes golf. -

Bulle vs Made Wade
Bulle has faced an impressive roster of fellow up-and-comers, including Tycoon Tax, Luciano Crakk and SMP. Repping Scarborough, Bulle delivers constant punches in a loud, aggressive manner. And in his battle against Yung Casper, he showed that he can also spit comedic material (listen for the Free Willy line in Round 2): -

Made Wade
Made Wade goes way back in KOTD history, with a 2009 battle against poRICH (who had somehow already battled nine times by this point). For a couple years, his battle résumé was empty, and only recently did he step back into the ring, with a victory in Ground Zero: -
